julius meinl am graben

j’avais entendu parler du julius meinl am graben avant mon voyage, dans des guides et par mes parents (qui sont allés à vienne en 2011). il s’agit d’une épicerie fine située sur le graben, une rue commerçante où plusieurs grandes marques (pensez armani) ont pignon sur rue, à quelques pas du stefansdom (cathédrale de stéphane).

i had heard about the julius meinl am graben before my trip, in travel guides and by my parents (who were in vienna in 2011). it’s a fine grocery store located on the graben, a commercial street where many big names (think armani) have a brick & mortar store, a few steps away from the stefansdom (the stephan cathedral).

on y trouve un café, et je crois que le magasin se situe sur plusieurs étages (je n’ai pas osé tout explorer, juste au rez-de-chaussée j’ai trouvé plein de bonnes choses à essayer).

la provenance des produits est indiquée sur les étagères, avec le drapeau et le nom du pays producteur. on y trouvait une bonne sélection de chocolats, confitures, bières, puddings de noël, etc, etc. je ne me suis pas attardée aux produits réfrigérés, ne pouvant en ramener avec moi.

there’s a café where you can eat in the store, and i think the store is on several levels (i didn’t explore it all, because i had already found many things to buy & try just on the ground floor).

the product provenance is indicated on the shelves, with the country of production’s flag & name. i found a large selection of chocolates, jams, beers, christmas puddings, etc, etc. i didn’t look at the refrigerated sections, since i couldn’t bring any back with me.

une bière finlandaise, la lapin kulta (lapin!). je l’ai prise en photo car j’aime bien les lapins. selon google traduction, le nom serait « or arctique » en français.

a finnish beer, called lapin kulta. (i thought it was funny because in french, lapin = bunny, and i love bunnies.) according to google translate, this beer would be called « arctic gold » in english.

on y vendait toute une série de tablettes de chocolats, aux emballages plus jolis les uns que les autres. initialement, je n’en ai pas acheté, me disant que le bel emballage ne voulait pas dire un bon chocolat. après avoir partagé cette photo sur facebook, une amie viennoise m’a dit que ces chocolats étaient excellents et que je devais absolument en acheter (ce que j’ai fait la veille de mon départ de vienne; entrée à venir sur les chocolats zotter).

there was a whole series of chocolate bars who’s packaging just got cuter with every bar. at first, i didn’t want to buy any, because i thought that it was all pretty packaging & was afraid the chocolate would be ordinary. after sharing this pic on facebook, a viennese friend told me i HAD to buy some of these chocolates because they were really good. this is what i did the day before i left (entry on the zotter chocolates to come).

mes premiers achats: biscuits écossais au caramel et aux pommes, chocolats lindt pour mes parents. j’ai beaucoup aimé les biscuits: ils goûtaient le beurre, la pomme et le caramel, et avaient une bonne odeur également.

my purchases: scottish apple caramel cookies, lindt chocolates for my parents. i especially liked the cookies: they tasted buttery, the taste of apple & caramel was strong, and the smell was divine.

des ritter sports: nougat, caramel et noix, et la saveur créée pour célébrer leur 100ème anniversaire: mélange de noix (cajoux, macadam et amandes).

d’autres chocolats: chili, gingembre, et… à la bière! (avec une licorne en plus sur l’emballage, comment ne pas aimer?). j’ai donné ce dernier à un ami, n’étant pas certaine de l’aimer. je vous donnerai de ses nouvelles :)

more chocolates: chili, ginger and… beer! (with a unicorn on the package, how awesome is that!). i gave this one to a friend, since i’m not a fan of beer. i’m eager to know what he thought of it.

et je pensais avoir pris une photo, mais il semble que non: j’y suis retournée afin d’acheter 2 portions individuelles de pudding de noël british, dont j’ai beaucoup entendu parler, mais que je n’avais pas encore goûté. à date, j’en ai mangé 1. je n’ai pas tellement aimé: beaucoup de raisins secs, épices bof. il me reste à voir si je vais aimer l’autre.

au total, mes achats m’ont coûté 36Euros (les 2 puddings individuels m’ont coûté 11.18Euros!). un bon endroit pour faire des découvertes et acheter des cadeaux, si on a un peu + de budget pour ce genre de dépenses.

i thought i had taken a picture, but apparently not: i went again to buy some individual portions of christmas pudding. i heard lots about these puddings, but never had the opportunity to try some. i bought 2, so far, i ate 1. i didn’t like it that much: lots of raisins, ordinary spices. hopefully i’ll like the other one more.

i bought for about 36EUros in total (the 2 puddings cost 11.18Euros!). i thought it was a good place for discoveries & to get gifts, if your budget allows it.
